Too often, it seems that staff are being gaslighted when they raise the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-essential-blocks-accordion\"><div class=\"eb-parent-wrapper eb-parent-eb-accordion-fcegzrx \"><div class=\"eb-accordion-container eb-accordion-fcegzrx\" data-accordion-type=\"accordion\" data-tab-icon=\"fas fa-angle-right\" data-expanded-icon=\"fas fa-angle-down\"><div class=\"eb-accordion-inner\">\n<div class=\"eb-accordion-item-pq6y3xy eb-accordion-wrapper\" data-clickable=\"false\"><div class=\"eb-accordion-title-wrapper\"><span class=\"eb-accordion-icon-wrapper\"><span class=\"fas fa-angle-right eb-accordion-icon\"><\/span><\/span><h3 class=\"eb-accordion-title\">Reporting of abuse of members<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"eb-accordion-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"eb-accordion-content\">\n<p><strong>Midlothian Local Association<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis AGM instructs Council to advise members to report any incident of abuse, including verbal, physical and\/or emotional, to the police as well as utilising any local reporting procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike Smith (Midlothian) successfully called for advice to members to report all abuse. \u201cSchools must be safe places for students and staff alike, not least because Health and Safety legislation requires it. Last year, 15,000 incidences of violence were reported. There has been a 989% increase in reported cases of assault in schools over the past four years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seconding, Jacqui Church (Glasgow) said, \u201cConsistent reporting will encourage a consistent approach, including from the police.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-essential-blocks-accordion\"><div class=\"eb-parent-wrapper eb-parent-eb-accordion-cdosjy3 \"><div class=\"eb-accordion-container eb-accordion-cdosjy3\" data-accordion-type=\"accordion\" data-tab-icon=\"fas fa-angle-right\" data-expanded-icon=\"fas fa-angle-down\"><div class=\"eb-accordion-inner\">\n<div class=\"eb-accordion-item-t37pp8z eb-accordion-wrapper\" data-clickable=\"false\"><div class=\"eb-accordion-title-wrapper\"><span class=\"eb-accordion-icon-wrapper\"><span class=\"fas fa-angle-right eb-accordion-icon\"><\/span><\/span><h3 class=\"eb-accordion-title\">Benevolent Fund training<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"eb-accordion-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"eb-accordion-content\">\n<p><strong>Edinburgh Local Association<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat this AGM instructs Council to provide annual training to LA Secretaries and Benevolent Fund Correspondents on the range of benefits for which members who are on low pay, or no pay may be eligible, and should changes to the benefits\u2019 systems occur during the yearly timespan for training, that a booklet containing that new information be produced and circulated to LA<br>Secretaries and Benevolent Fund Correspondents.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Alison Murphy (Edinburgh) successfully called for annual Benevolent Fund training to ensure that the best possible support is available for members in need. \u201cFor many of our members, the impact of the cost of living crisis is horrific. But the Benevolent Fund can only offer so much support, we also need to be able to point our members towards other support that may be available to them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-essential-blocks-accordion\"><div class=\"eb-parent-wrapper eb-parent-eb-accordion-zisewan \"><div class=\"eb-accordion-container eb-accordion-zisewan\" data-accordion-type=\"accordion\" data-tab-icon=\"fas fa-angle-right\" data-expanded-icon=\"fas fa-angle-down\"><div class=\"eb-accordion-inner\">\n<div class=\"eb-accordion-item-ij2qixh eb-accordion-wrapper\" data-clickable=\"false\"><div class=\"eb-accordion-title-wrapper\"><span class=\"eb-accordion-icon-wrapper\"><span class=\"fas fa-angle-right eb-accordion-icon\"><\/span><\/span><h3 class=\"eb-accordion-title\">Social media communications<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"eb-accordion-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"eb-accordion-content\">\n<p><strong>Edinburgh Local Association<br>Glasgow Local Association<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat this AGM instructs Council to investigate and report on:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>i. The extent to which schools are using social media such as Twitter as a method of communication to parents.<br>ii. The pressures felt by teachers from employers and\/or SLT to use social media, such as Twitter, to communicate with parents and\/or young people.<br>iii. The amount of time spent by colleagues updating such social media platforms and if this is included in the Work Time Agreement.<br>iv. If devices are provided by employers to allow this to happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AGM further instructs Council, based on this investigation, to produce advice and guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/sej.org.uk\/AGM2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/07\/William-Insch-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3214\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Billy Insch (Glasgow) was successful in a call for an investigation and report into school use of social media. \u201cThe introduction of social media means that parents can now choose the time and place of contact with teachers \u2013 it has created an epidemic of expectations placed on teachers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phil Pearce (Edinburgh) added, \u201cPupils in a Glasgow school faced vile racist abuse last year, following their photograph with Nicola Sturgeon being posted on Twitter. We are increasingly asked to post more and more detail of our everyday working lives on social media for all to see, and this will be there forever.
