It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of David Drever, who died on 18 August 2025. A passionate educator, tireless trade-unionist and committed campaigner for social justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Born in Glasgow in 1952, David graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1976 and trained as a teacher at Jordanhill College of Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After beginning his teaching career in central Scotland, David moved to Orkney \u2014 a region to which his family had close roots \u2014 and joined the teaching staff at Kirkwall High School. He earned the respect of learners and colleagues alike, becoming deeply involved in the community beyond the classroom: serving on the Health Board, chairing the Orkney Archaeology Society, and contributing to civic and cultural life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
David\u2019s commitment to teaching went hand in hand with a strong dedication to the rights of educators, and to equality in education. He was a long-time activist within the EIS, serving on the Executive and national Council, then as vice-president, and, in 2008, being elected EIS President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
David was a committed socialist, rooted in his family\u2019s tradition of working-class activism. He believed deeply in education as a vehicle for social justice and solidarity, and was a major proponent of Education for Peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
David Drever embodied many of the best characteristics of teaching \u2013 he was principled, compassionate, articulate and courageous, reminding colleagues and society that the work of teaching is inseparable from the cause of social justice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
