{"id":3005,"date":"2022-02-01T14:37:53","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T14:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sej.org.uk\/feb2022\/?p=3005"},"modified":"2023-06-12T14:41:07","modified_gmt":"2023-06-12T13:41:07","slug":"eis-urges-government-to-support-education-for-women-girls-in-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sej.org.uk\/feb2022\/eis-urges-government-to-support-education-for-women-girls-in-afghanistan\/","title":{"rendered":"EIS Urges Government to Support Education for Women &amp; Girls in Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The EIS has called upon both the Scottish and UK Governments to support efforts to eliminate all barriers to girls\u2019 and women\u2019s participation in education in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EIS is also calling for government to support enhanced humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan, and to welcome and support refugees fleeing the country for their own safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan has written to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Prime Minister Boris Johnson, urging their governments to do more to support people in Afghanistan following the Taliban take-over of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his letters to both leaders, Mr Flanagan says, \u201cThe Taliban, which seized power earlier this year, is reversing decades of educational and human rights\u2019 progress and targeting schools and educational institutions to hinder girls\u2019 education and erase women\u2019s participation.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1996 to 2001 it barred girls and women from almost all work, the right to vote and to access education. Despite recent assurances from the Taliban, Education International (EI) member organisations in Afghanistan are reporting that the situation is getting worse for women teachers and students, especially girls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Flanagan then continues, \u201cThe international community needs to act to ensure that the right to education for all is safeguarded and particular attention is given to decisions and policies impacting on girls and women in Afghanistan. The safety and security of all students and educators, especially girls and women are severely threatened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Taliban government recently barred girls and women from attending secondary schools (grades 7 to 12). Due to a severe drought, the security situation and the harsh winter, half of the country\u2019s population (39 million), mostly women and children, face starvation and need urgent humanitarian assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his letter to the UK Prime Minister, Mr Flanagan adds, \u201cIt is the EIS view that the UK Government has a moral responsibility to provide humanitarian support, to facilitate rescue\/resettlement and to provide asylum to Afghan refugees in light of our longstanding military operations in Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The EIS has called upon both the Scottish and UK Governments to support efforts to eliminate all barriers to girls\u2019 and women\u2019s participation in education in Afghanistan.
