Members of the EIS ULA at Robert Gordon University (RGU) and the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) took part in co-ordinated strike action on 11th September 2025 as a direct response to the continued threat of compulsory redundancies at both institutions.

At UWS, a recent ballot saw over 94% of voting members back industrial action, while RGU members achieved a similar mandate earlier in the year. This clear show of solidarity sends an unequivocal message to senior management that staff will not stand by while jobs are cut, and the academic provision of either university is eroded.

Lecturing staff at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) also took part in a further 3 days of strike action throughout September, demonstrating their determination in this fight. Despite repeated calls for meaningful negotiations, university management has yet to make any response, failing to acknowledge the dispute, which has led to the continuation of the strike by its members.

The EIS ULA has indicated that the strike action will continue throughout October, with notice of further strike dates having already been sent to the university.

At the time of going to print, the EIS had withdrawn its statutory ballot in pursuit of the redundancies at RGU. EIS ULA will continue to campaign collectively against redundancies at RGU and provide representation where necessary to individuals the University has chosen to make redundant.
